Vasilis Skoulas was born in Anogia, Rethymno in 1946 in a place and a large family with a tradition in music and the arts in general. Grandson of Michalis Skoulas, great lyricist of his time and son of the famous folk painter Alkiviadis Skoulas or Gryliou. He began to learn the lyre at the age of seven and at the age of just 16 managed to establish himself as one of the first lyricists and singers of the island, already charting his own course in the Cretan musical tradition.
